MavCoat · Flexible Epoxy

MavCoat Flex Flexible Epoxy

MavCoat Flex is a 100% solids, two-component flexible epoxy. The product was designed for wood applications, but it can also be used to add a flexible layer over primed concrete.

MavCoat Flex: Flexible Epoxy

MavCoat Flex is not designed to be used as a stand-alone product; it must be over-coated with a more durable Maverick coating system. Apply the basecoat within 24 hours of the coat of MavCoat Flex. If the recoat window is missed, the coating system will need to be sanded.

Where it fits: MavCoat Flex is a flexible intermediate layer applied over wood or over concrete primed with a Maverick epoxy, and must be over-coated with a more durable Maverick coating system.

Read Before Specifying

  • MavCoat Flex is not designed to be used as a stand-alone product. MavCoat Flex must be over-coated with a more durable Maverick coating system.
  • Do not use MavCoat Flex as a joint filler alternate.
  • Concrete must have a minimum compressive strength of 3,500 psi and a tensile strength of 300 psi.
  • Do not apply at a temperature or thickness not recommended.
  • Do not delay in pouring mixed material onto the floor.
  • Do not apply over loose or unsound concrete, asphalt or bitumen substrates, glazed tile or nonporous brick and tile, magnesite, copper, metal, polyesters, or elastomeric membranes.

  • Theoretical coverage: Wet film 20 mils (508 microns) minimum to 30 mils (762 microns) maximum; coverage 53 – 80 sq. ft./gal. Higher temperatures will shorten pot-life and working time. Apply the basecoat within 24 hours of the coat of MavCoat Flex; if the recoat window is missed, the coating system will need to be sanded.
  • Packaging: MavCoat Flex 2-gallon kit, clear (item 40011154), mixed 1 Base : 1 Activator by volume.
  • Colors and finish: Clear / Gloss. 2 gallons of MavCoat Flex clear can be pigmented with 1 pint of MavTints in colors including Haze Gray, Light Gray, Deck Gray, Sandstone, White, Black, and Tile Red.
  • Shelf life and storage: 12 months from date of manufacture when stored indoors in the original unopened container at 60°F – 85°F (16°C – 29°C) in a dry location with humidity below 65%. Do not allow materials to freeze.

Substrate Requirements

Wood and primed or coated concrete surfaces must be sound, clean, dry and free of contaminants such as dirt, dust, grease, oil, silicones and other contaminants that may negatively affect adhesion. Concrete must have a minimum compressive strength of 3,500 psi and a tensile strength of 300 psi, and should be primed with a Maverick epoxy before MavCoat Flex is applied. A suitable moisture barrier must be in place for concrete slabs on-grade, since seasonal variations in ground moisture can cause excessive moisture vapor transmission regardless of results measured before coating; the sheet notes that 16 mils of MavCoat MVB is resistant to MVT up to 20 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft. in 24 hours per ASTM F1869 or 95% RH per ASTM F2170. Previously coated surfaces must be cleaned to prevent contaminants from being spread and thoroughly sanded until deglossed. Floor temperature must be at least 5 degrees over the current dew point.

Mixing and Installation

MavCoat Flex is mixed 1 part Base to 1 part Activator by volume. Pre-mix the Base at low speed for one minute, adding pigment to the Base if tinting, then add the Activator and mix for three minutes until uniform; do not mix more material than can be applied in 20 minutes. Immediately pour all mixed epoxy onto the floor in a long bead approximately 8 – 12 inches wide, without scraping the pail sides or leaving it overturned to drain, and never roll material out of a bucket or roller pan. Wearing spiked shoes, spread evenly at 20 – 30 mils with a notched squeegee, overlapping passes and plowing extra material to the side as you move down the floor, then back-roll with a non-shed 3/8” roller to minimize application lines and leave a consistent film thickness. Do not back-roll material after it begins to get sticky, as the epoxy will not level and colored epoxy may turn a different shade.
