MavCoat ESD Static Dissipative Urethane Coating

MavCoat ESD is a unique high performance, three-component, high solids, low VOC urethane floor coating that provides static dissipative electrical properties. MavCoat ESD is translucent gray and must be mixed with MavTints to yield a consistent, satin appearance with a light texture.

MavCoat ESD: Static Dissipative Urethane Coating

MavCoat ESD kits must be pigmented with 1 pint MavTints per gallon. Since the functional filler in the product is gray, the resulting color will be slightly darker gray than MavTints in epoxy, which is most apparent with Sandstone. Do not use White.

MavCoat ESD can be grounded to the building by installing copper tape underneath it on the epoxy insulator coat and connecting it to common ground. 2 inch wide, conductive copper tape is commonly used to create a grounding point every 1000 sq. ft. in spots that do not receive traffic. A 2 foot long strip is all that is needed to connect the floor to a ground via an electrical outlet or steel column (paint needs to be removed where tape is adhered).

Applying the coating thicker than recommended, or rolling the material once it has begun to tack up, will cause bubbles, roller lines and an inconsistent appearance, and may negatively affect the ESD properties of the coating. Applying outside the coverage rate may also affect the ESD properties.

Where it fits: MavCoat ESD is a topcoat, typically applied over an epoxy system that is tinted a similar color.

Read Before Specifying

  • Do not apply without MavTints pigment.
  • Do not apply at a temperature not recommended.
  • ESD flooring is only part of an electrostatic charge management solution.
  • Do not make partial mixes.
  • Do not apply over loose or unsound concrete, asphalt or bitumen substrates, glazed tile or nonporous brick and tile, magnesite, copper, metal, polyesters, or elastomeric membranes.
  • Moving joints and shrinkage cracks may reflect through the system. Joints that are designed to move may reflect through the finished flooring system if they are not honored.
  • Applying thicker than recommended or allowing material to pool may affect the electrical readings.
  • Tire marking may occur.

  • Theoretical coverage: Applied at 2 – 3 wet mils (51 – 76 microns) at 600 sq. ft./gal. (14.7 m²/L).
  • Packaging: 1-Gallon Kit: ESD filler for a 1-gallon mix, supplied in a large mixing pail. Gray / Satin. Kits must be pigmented with 1 pint MavTints per gallon.
  • Colors and finish: Translucent gray, satin finish; must be pigmented with 1 pint MavTints per gallon. Because the functional filler is gray, the resulting color will be slightly darker gray than MavTints in epoxy, most apparent with Sandstone. Do not use White.
  • Shelf life and storage: 12 months from date of manufacture when stored indoors in the original unopened container at 60°F – 85°F (16°C – 29°C) in a dry location with humidity below 65%. Do not allow materials to freeze.

Substrate Requirements

Concrete and coated concrete surfaces must be sound, clean, dry and free of dirt, dust, grease, oil, silicones and other contaminants that may affect adhesion. A suitable moisture barrier must be in place for slabs on grade; the MVT rate must not exceed three pounds per 1,000 square feet per 24 hours per ASTM F1869 and slab relative humidity must not exceed 75% per ASTM F2170, otherwise MavCoat MVB may be required. New or bare concrete must be cured a minimum of 28 days, diamond ground or shotblasted to a CSP 1-3 profile (SSPC-SP13/NACE 6 or ICRI Guideline No. 310.2), and primed with an epoxy tinted a similar color to the topcoat. On previously coated surfaces, thoroughly sand or grind the existing coating with 60 grit sandpaper or diamonds and clean it; if the prepped surface completely covers the concrete, is smooth and insulative, proceed with MavCoat ESD. Air, surface and material temperatures should be 60° – 85°F; higher temperatures and humidity shorten pot life and working time.

Mixing and Installation

Pre-mix Part B with a drill and Jiffy-type blade at low speed, slowly add Part A and mix well, then add the mixed resin to the Part C filler and mix slowly to wet out the light filler and reduce dusting, mixing for 3 minutes or until uniform. Add 1 pint of premixed MavTints per gallon and mix 3 additional minutes until streak free; never mix more than one kit at a time. Cut in edges with a brush, applying thin around obstructions and at the base of coves, since material on vertical surfaces will run and pool. Pour into a roller pan and apply with a 3/8” nap roller at 600 sq. ft./gal. in parallel paths, agitating the pan frequently because the Part C filler can settle, then back-roll perpendicular in a V-shape pattern to spread the material evenly and remove roller lines. Minimize time between tie-ins and break at control joints or natural breaks. For best results, finish roll on spiked shoes in the same direction as the original passes; the material will not flow out, so visible defects will cure in place. Do not back-roll coating that has begun to tack up, which can cause orange peel texture or a whitish haze.
