MavCoat MVB Moisture Vapor Barrier Primer
MavCoat MVB is a 100% solids, two-component, epoxy primer designed for concrete floors with moisture vapor transmission (MVT) problems. This primer is applied directly to concrete to reduce adhesion loss and blistering caused by MVT. MavCoat MVB is resistant to MVT up to 25 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft. in 24 hours per ASTM F1869 or 95% relative humidity (RH) per ASTM F2170. This product is also available in two cure speed options.
MavCoat MVB: Moisture Vapor Barrier Primer
MavCoat MVB is supplied with a Standard Part-B or a Fast Part-B. Both kits cover 300 sq. ft.; the Fast version shortens work time, tack-free and recoat times, and MavCoat MVB with MavCoat MVB Fast Part-B can be used down to 50°F.
All previous joint filler and patching materials must be completely removed before MavCoat MVB is applied. Cracks and holes are cleaned out with a wire brush and vacuum; larger cracks are widened to a 1/4” width and depth, the sidewalls primed with MavCoat MVB and the void patched with thickened MavCoat MVB. Sidewalls of moving joints that will be honored are also primed with MavCoat MVB and allowed to cure before an appropriate joint material is installed. Patching and joint materials may be installed after MavCoat MVB application.
Decorative chip can be broadcast into the thicker build coat of MavCoat MVB before it sets.
Where it fits: MavCoat MVB is a primer applied directly to concrete under all Maverick coating systems where MVT resistance is desired; it is not a stand-alone product and must be over-coated with a more durable Maverick coating system.

Read Before Specifying
- 16 total mils of MavCoat MVB (15.3 mils MavCoat MVB Fast) must be applied to achieve MVT resistance up to 25 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft. in 24 hours per ASTM F1869 or 95% RH per ASTM F2170.
- MavCoat MVB is not designed to be used as a stand-alone product. MavCoat MVB must be over-coated with a more durable Maverick coating system.
- Concrete must have a minimum compressive strength of 3,500 psi and a tensile strength of 300 psi.
- This product will not prevent failures caused by Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) or contaminants left by previously applied hardeners/sealers.
- Do not apply at a temperature or thickness not recommended.
- Do not delay in pouring mixed material onto the floor.
- Do not apply over loose or unsound concrete, asphalt or bitumen substrates, glazed tile or nonporous brick and tile, magnesite, copper, metal, polyesters, or elastomeric membranes.
- Moving joints and shrinkage cracks may reflect through the system. Joints that are designed to move may reflect through the finished flooring system if they are not honored.
- Do not allow materials to freeze.

- Theoretical coverage: Mixed MavCoat MVB is applied at a nominal 16 mils (100 sq. ft. per gallon). A 3-gallon Standard kit covers 300 sq. ft. A 2.86-gallon MavCoat MVB Fast kit also covers 300 sq. ft. (15.3 mils).
- Packaging: MavCoat MVB Part-A: 2-gallon, clear. MavCoat MVB Part-B (Standard): 1-gallon, clear. MavCoat MVB Fast Part-B: 0.86-gallon, clear. 3-gallon MavCoat MVB kits and 2.86-gallon MavCoat MVB Fast kits must not be split.
- Colors and finish: Clear, gloss finish. Each 3-gallon kit of clear MavCoat MVB can be pigmented with up to 2 pints of MavTints (1 pint per 1.5 mixed gallons) in colors including Haze Gray, Light Gray, Deck Gray, Sandstone, White, Black, and Tile Red.
- Shelf life and storage: 12 months from date of manufacture when stored indoors in the original unopened container at 60°F – 85°F (16°C – 29°C) in a dry location with humidity below 65%.
Substrate Requirements
Concrete and coated concrete surfaces must be sound, clean, dry and free of dirt, dust, grease, oil, silicones and other contaminants that may affect adhesion. A suitable moisture barrier must be in place for slabs on grade, since seasonal variations in ground moisture can cause excessive MVT regardless of pre-application readings; 16 mils of MavCoat MVB is resistant to MVT up to 25 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft. in 24 hours per ASTM F1869 or 95% RH per ASTM F2170. New or bare concrete is diamond ground or shotblasted to a CSP 3 or greater profile depending on total system thickness (SSPC-SP13/NACE 6 or ICRI Guideline No. 310.2). Previously coated surfaces are cleaned, then thoroughly ground with 30 grit metal diamonds to completely remove any grout or topcoats that are not epoxy based. All previous joint filler and patching materials must be completely removed before application. Air, surface and material temperatures should be 60° – 85°F (16° – 29°C), with the floor at least 5 degrees above the dew point; MavCoat MVB with the Fast Part-B can be used down to 50°F.
Mixing and Installation
Pre-mix Part-A at low speed for 1 minute, mixing in MavTints at no more than 1 pint per 1.5 mixed gallons (2 pints per 3-gallon kit), then add Part-B and mix for three minutes until uniform; do not mix more than can be applied in 25 – 30 minutes, and never split a kit. Immediately pour all mixed material onto the floor in a long bead approximately 8 – 12 inches wide rather than rolling from a bucket or pan. Wearing spiked shoes, spread with a notched squeegee to cover 300 sq. ft. per kit; a tight, thin prime coat with no back-roll is the best way to minimize outgassing bubbles, with the balance of the material applied after the primer has set to reach the full coverage rate. Back-roll with a non-shed 3/8” roller across the squeegee passes to leave a consistent film thickness. Before overcoating, inspect the set MavCoat MVB for pinholes or voids and sand and recoat if needed; thickened MavCoat MVB may be used to patch more severe holes or cracks. Apply the second coat or the topcoat within 24 hours of the initial coat; if the recoat window is missed, the coating system will need to be sanded.
