MavPrime · Moisture-Tolerant Primer & Coating

MavPrime MVT Moisture-Tolerant Epoxy Primer

MavPrime MVT is a two-component, 100% solids, high-performance epoxy floor coating / primer that is moisture tolerant and able to be applied to green concrete. Mixed with MavTints color packs, this durable material cures to a smooth, glossy surface or, with the addition of aggregate, a non-skid texture. MavPrime MVT can be used as a primer under other flooring systems or as a standalone coating.

MavPrime MVT: Moisture-Tolerant Epoxy Primer

Concrete relative humidity (RH) is measured before application. Up to 85% RH, one 8 – 10 mil coat is sufficient; above 85% RH, two full 8 – 10 mil coats are applied. Using two different colors, or a clear first coat and a pigmented second coat, aids complete coverage.

Maverick offers a complete line of topcoats over MavPrime MVT for increased resistance to UV exposure, chemicals and high traffic.

Where it fits: MavPrime MVT is a green concrete primer under Maverick epoxy and polymer floor coatings, and can also be used as a standalone coating or sealer.

  • Theoretical coverage: Applied at 8 – 10 wet mils (203 – 254 microns) per coat, covering 200 sq. ft./gal. (4.9 m²/L) per coat @ 8 mils. Typical: 2 coats @ 200 sq. ft./gal. = 16 mils total.

  • Colors and finish: Clear or pigmented, gloss finish. Add one MavTints color pack per 3 mixed gallons of MavPrime MVT; for white, light, and safety colors, use 2 color packs per 3 mixed gallons.
  • Shelf life and storage: 12 months from date of manufacture when stored indoors in the original unopened container at 65°F – 80°F (18°C – 27°C) in a dry location.

Substrate Requirements

Apply only to clean and sound concrete that is free of coatings, sealers, curing compounds, oils, greases or other contaminants that may affect adhesion. Chemically contaminated concrete must be neutralized or removed, and any laitance or weak surface layers removed. Concrete must have a minimum surface tensile strength of 300 psi per ASTM D4541 and be mechanically prepared to a CSP 3 – CSP 5 profile per ICRI Guideline 310.2R (equal to 60-grit sandpaper or coarser), with all surface irregularities, cracks, expansion joints and control joints addressed before application. Measure concrete relative humidity before application: up to 85% RH, one 8 – 10 mil coat is sufficient; above 85% RH, apply two full 8 – 10 mil coats. Do not apply to slabs on grade unless a heavy, unruptured vapor barrier has been installed under the slab. Because outgassing may occur on porous concrete, apply while the substrate temperature is dropping (typically evening); double priming greatly reduces outgassing. Air temperature 50° – 95°F (10° – 35°C); the surface must be at least 5°F above the dew point.

Mixing and Installation

MavPrime MVT is mixed 2 Parts A (Resin) to 1 Part B (Hardener) by volume. Pre-mix Part A; if pigmenting, add pre-mixed MavTints to Part A at one color pack per 3 mixed gallons (two packs for white, light, and safety colors). Pour Part B into the Part A pail and mix for a minimum of two minutes with a Jiffy-type mixer at low speed, scraping the sides of the pail since unmixed material will not cure. Apply by roller, or by squeegee and back-roll, emptying the pail onto the concrete quickly to maximize working time, as material left in the pail generates heat and loses pot life. For concrete above 85% RH, apply two full 8 – 10 mil coats, using two colors or a clear first coat and pigmented second coat to aid complete coverage; below 85% RH one coat is sufficient, though two coats help ensure complete coverage. For a non-skid texture, add clean, dry aggregate. Apply the second coat after the first is tack free (approx. 10 hours @ 70°F) and before the 24-hour recoat window closes; if the window is missed, the coating must be sanded before recoating.

Full step-by-step instructions, pot life and recoat windows are in the MavPrime MVT product data sheet. Maverick installs MavPrime MVT with its own crews.
