MavPrime · 100% Solids Epoxy Primer

MavPrime EP 100% Solids Epoxy Primer

MavPrime EP is a 100% solids, zero VOC, blush resistant, and low viscosity epoxy primer that delivers excellent surface wetting, penetration, and extended open time to help seal concrete pores and promote adhesion. This easy-to-apply primer is ideal for use with other Maverick coatings, including Decorative Chip and Metallic Additive systems.

MavPrime EP: 100% Solids Epoxy Primer

MavPrime EP is a two-component (Base and Activator) clear, high-gloss epoxy that cures by chemical reaction between the components. It is mixed 2 Base : 1 Activator by volume, has a mixed viscosity of 700 cP and a work time of 30–35 minutes at 73°F and 45% RH; higher temperatures will shorten pot-life and working time.

It is applied as a tight, thin coat at 3–8 wet mils to fill concrete pinholes and minimize outgassing bubbles. A second coat of primer or the basecoat must be applied within 24 hours of the initial coat; if the recoat window is missed, the coating system will need to be sanded.

Where it fits: Use as a thin primer under all Maverick epoxy basecoats, including Decorative Chip and Metallic Additive systems.

  • Do not apply at a temperature or thickness not recommended.
  • Do not delay in pouring mixed material onto the floor.
  • Do not apply over loose or unsound concrete, asphalt or bitumen substrates, glazed tile or nonporous brick and tile, magnesite, copper, metal, polyesters, or elastomeric membranes.
  • Moving joints and shrinkage cracks may reflect through system. Joints that are designed to move may reflect through the finished flooring system if they are not honored.
  • Tire marking may occur.

  • Packaging: MavPrime EP 100% Solids Epoxy Primer is supplied as a 1.5-Gallon Kit, Clear / Gloss, item number 40008895.
  • Colors and finish: Clear with a high gloss finish. 1.5 gallons of MavPrime EP clear can be pigmented with 1 pint of MavTints in colors including Haze Gray, Light Gray, Deck Gray, Sandstone, White, Black, and Tile Red.
  • Shelf life and storage: 24 months from date of manufacture when stored indoors in the original unopened container at 60°F – 85°F (16°C – 29°C) in a dry location with humidity below 65%. Do not allow materials to freeze.

Substrate Requirements

Concrete and coated concrete surfaces must be sound, clean, dry and free of contaminants such as dirt, dust, grease, oil and silicones that may negatively affect adhesion. New or bare concrete must be diamond ground or shotblasted to a CSP 3 or greater surface profile depending on total system thickness (refer to SSPC-SP13/NACE 6 or ICRI Technical Guideline No. 310.2), and new concrete must be cured a minimum of 28 days. A suitable moisture barrier must be in place for slabs on-grade; the MVT rate must not exceed three pounds per 1,000 square feet per 24 hours per ASTM F1869 and the slab relative humidity must not exceed 75% per ASTM F2170, otherwise a MavCoat MVB moisture vapor barrier primer may be required. Previously coated surfaces must be cleaned and thoroughly ground with 30 grit metal diamonds to completely remove any grout or topcoats that are not epoxy based and provide the proper profile. Air, surface and material temperatures must be 60°–85°F (16°–29°C), and the floor temperature must be at least 5 degrees over the current dew point.

Mixing and Installation

MavPrime EP is mixed 2 parts Base to 1 part Activator by volume. Pre-mix the Base at low speed for 1 minute, pour it into a 2–5 gallon mixing pail (adding MavTints to the Base if pigmenting), then add the Activator and mix for three minutes until uniform. Mix no more material than can be applied in 10–15 minutes, because the material will stiffen or tack-up. Immediately pour all mixed material onto the floor in a long bead approximately 8–12 inches wide rather than rolling from a bucket or pan, and, wearing spiked shoes, spread it evenly at 3–8 mils with a flat squeegee or metal spring blade, overlapping passes to fill concrete pinholes; a tight, thin coat with no backroll is the best way to minimize outgassing bubbles. If back-rolling, use a non-shed 3/8" roller to even out the squeegee passes and leave a consistent film thickness. After the primer has set, inspect the surface; if pinholes are not completely sealed, apply an additional coat within 24 hours before applying the basecoat.
