Urethane Cement vs. Epoxy: Which Survives Thermal Shock?

Urethane cement survives thermal shock; standard epoxy usually does not. A cementitious urethane mortar like MavCrete UM has a coefficient of thermal expansion close to concrete's, so it moves with the slab through washdown cycles rated to 250°F at ¼-inch thickness. Rigid epoxy films stressed by rapid heating and cooling can debond. Choose epoxy for broad chemical exposure, decorative finishes, and lower cost; choose urethane cement wherever hot washdown, steam, or thermal cycling is routine.

Thermal Cycling Delamination: Why Good Epoxy Floors Come Off Hot Floors

Picture the shift a processing floor actually works: 180°F caustic washdown at midnight, a cold rinse behind it, a forklift at 6 a.m. Each swing makes the slab and the floor system expand and contract — and if the two move at different rates, the stress lands on the bond line.

One hot washdown won't hurt a sound epoxy floor. Hundreds of them, night after night, work the bond like bending a paperclip until sections release as sheets. Installers call it thermal cycling delamination — not a materials defect or prep failure, just the predictable result of asking a rigid film to ride a slab that keeps changing size.

Why Urethane Cement Doesn't Care

Cementitious urethane solves this at the chemistry level. MavCrete UM combines urethane resin with cement and graded aggregate into a mortar whose coefficient of thermal expansion is close to concrete's own — when the slab moves, the floor moves with it, and the bond line never takes the shear.

The published rating follows: thermal shock service through 250°F washdown at ¼-inch thickness, repeated 180°F washdown and steam cleaning handled without disbonding, and bond testing (ASTM D4541) that ends in 100% concrete failure — the substrate gives up before the floor does.

Can one floor use both urethane cement and epoxy?
