MavClad · Epoxy Mortar System

MavClad EM Trowel-Applied Epoxy Mortar

MavClad EM is a heavy-duty polymer resin and aggregate floor system suited for floors subjected to chemical exposure and mechanical abuse. Applied at 1/4", this durable system is commonly utilized for new construction as a protective overlay or for renovation work to restore concrete surfaces.

MavClad EM: Trowel-Applied Epoxy Mortar

MavClad EM is a two-component, 100% solids, zero-VOC trowel-applied epoxy topping. The MavClad EM Epoxy Binder (2 Resin : 1 Hardener by volume) is combined with MavClad EM Trowel Aggregate at 200 lbs. per 3 gallons of binder, placed with a screed box or rake and trowelled smooth.

The mortar is installed over a MavPrime EP primer and finished with an optional MavSeal UPA grout coat. Maverick offers a complete line of topcoats for increased resistance to UV exposure, chemicals, and high traffic; a topcoat may be applied after the grout coat is tack free and before the 24-hour recoat window closes.

Where it fits: MavClad EM is the 1/4" trowel-applied mortar layer of the system, installed over MavPrime EP primer (MavPrime MVT for green concrete) with an optional MavSeal UPA grout coat and an optional topcoat for texture, finish or UV stability.

Read Before Specifying

  • Like all epoxies, MavClad EM is not 100% color stable without use of a UV-stable topcoat
  • Not designed for exterior use or constant immersion applications
  • Floors should be sloped to drain to prevent standing water or chemicals
  • Confirm product performance in the specific chemical environment prior to use
  • Do not apply to slabs on grade without a heavy, unruptured vapor barrier, or where moisture / MVT is present
  • For industrial/commercial use; installation by trained personnel only
  • Do not allow materials to freeze

  • Theoretical coverage: Typical application is a 1/4" trowel-applied topping. Mortar: 120 sq. ft./mix (3 gal binder + 200 lbs agg.). Primer (MavPrime EP): 200 sq. ft./gal. Grout Coat (MavSeal UPA): 175 sq. ft./gal.
  • Packaging: MavClad EM Epoxy Binder is supplied as a 15-Gallon Kit (pigmented); MavClad EM Trowel Aggregate is supplied in a 50 lb. Bag.
  • Colors and finish: Variety of color pack options available. MavClad EM is available in Gloss, Orange Peel, or Satin finish.
  • Shelf life and storage: 12 months from date of manufacture when stored indoors in the original unopened container at 60°F – 85°F (16°C – 29°C) in a dry location with humidity below 65%.

Substrate Requirements

Concrete and coated concrete surfaces must be sound, clean, dry and free of dirt, dust, grease, oil, silicones and other contaminants that may negatively affect adhesion; contaminated concrete must be neutralized or removed. New concrete should be cured a minimum of 28 days. Remove laitance and weak surface layers, confirm a minimum surface tensile strength of 300 psi per ASTM D4541, and mechanically prepare to a CSP 3 – CSP 5 profile per ICRI Guideline 310.2R (equal to 60-grit sandpaper or coarser). Address all surface irregularities, cracks, expansion joints and control joints before application. Moisture vapor transmission (MVT) should be 3 lbs. or less per 1,000 sq. ft. in 24 hours per ASTM F1869 and relative humidity must not exceed 75% per ASTM F2170. Air temperature should be 50° – 95°F and the floor at least 5°F above the dew point.

Mixing and Installation

Prime the concrete with MavPrime EP at 175 – 250 sq. ft./gal. (the primer may be thinned with up to 5% xylene; pre-mix the Part A resin before use), or with MavPrime MVT on green concrete. MavClad EM is mixed at 2 parts resin to 1 part hardener by volume: combine Part A Resin and Part B Hardener with a Jiffy-type mixer at low speed, pour into a concrete or mortar mixer, add Trowel Aggregate at 200 lbs. per 3 gallons of binder and mix thoroughly. Apply the mortar with a screed box or a rake set at the appropriate height, trowel smooth with a power trowel or steel finishing trowel, and sand the surface to remove trowel marks. A grout coat is then pulled tightly over the surface with a trowel at approximately 150 – 250 sq. ft./gal. to fill slight voids and provide a smooth finish. After the grout coat is tack free (approx. 10 hours @ 70°F) and before the 24-hour recoat window closes, a topcoat may be applied for texture, finish or UV stability. Pot life is 25 minutes at 77°F; higher temperatures shorten pot life and working time.

Full step-by-step instructions, pot life and recoat windows are in the MavClad EM product data sheet. Maverick installs MavClad EM with its own crews.
