MavSeal · High Wear Urethane Topcoat

MavSeal HWU High Wear Urethane Topcoat

MavSeal HWU is a unique high performance, three-component, high solids, low VOC urethane floor coating that provides superior resistance against abrasion, chemicals, corrosion, and UV exposure while imparting flexibility. It is supplied as a neutral topcoat that has a satin finish with a light, consistent texture.

MavSeal HWU: High Wear Urethane Topcoat

MavSeal HWU is a thin topcoat applied at 2 – 3 mils (600 sq. ft./gal.) over an epoxy primer and basecoat. One gallon of MavSeal HWU can be pigmented with 1 pint of MavTints in colors including Haze Gray, Light Gray, Deck Gray, Sandstone, White, Black, and Tile Red.

Chemical resistance is rated Excellent for 10% and 30% hydrochloric acid, 20% ammonium nitrate, 20% sodium chloride, 50% sodium hydroxide, methyl ethyl ketone, xylene, ethylene glycol, isopropyl alcohol, mineral spirits, transmission fluid, motor oil, 50:1 gas/oil mixture, E85, E95 and unleaded gasoline, Skydrol, bleach, urine, coffee, cola and red wine; Good for vinegar, 10% citric acid, 10% nitric acid, 50% phosphoric acid, 10% sulfuric acid, brake fluid, Betadine and mustard (stain is the only defect); and Fair for 10% acetic acid, 37% and 70% sulfuric acid and ketchup.

Where it fits: MavSeal HWU is a topcoat for epoxy systems, typically applied over an epoxy primer and basecoat after the epoxy has hardened and been sanded.

Read Before Specifying

  • This thin topcoat will not cover or hide damage and defects in previous coatings or basecoats it is going over.
  • The high solids formula may not adhere to epoxies that are not soft and not sanded well.
  • Do not apply at temperatures and thicknesses not recommended.
  • Do not make partial mixes.
  • Do not apply the neutral version over a dark primer or broadcast blend; the filler will reflect light and result in a hazy/cloudy appearance.
  • Do not apply over loose or unsound concrete, asphalt or bitumen substrates, glazed tile or nonporous brick and tile, magnesite, copper, metal, polyesters, or elastomeric membranes.
  • Moving joints and shrinkage cracks may reflect through the system. Joints that are designed to move may reflect through the finished flooring system if they are not honored.
  • Applying thicker than recommended, allowing material to pool, or rolling in too late may leave a white, hazy appearance.
  • Tire marking may occur.

  • Theoretical coverage: Wet mils (microns): 2 – 3 (51 – 76). Coverage: 600 sq. ft./gal. (14.7 m²/L). Applying thicker than recommended is more likely to create bubbles, soft film, and texture and gloss variation.
  • Packaging: Premeasured 1-Gallon Kits.
  • Colors and finish: Neutral with a satin finish and a light, consistent texture. One gallon can be pigmented with 1 pint of MavTints in colors including Haze Gray, Light Gray, Deck Gray, Sandstone, White, Black, and Tile Red.
  • Shelf life and storage: 12 months from date of manufacture when stored indoors in the original unopened container at 60°F – 85°F (16°C – 29°C) in a dry location with humidity below 65%. Do not allow materials to freeze.

Substrate Requirements

Concrete and coated concrete surfaces must be sound, clean, dry and free of contaminants such as dirt, dust, grease, oil and silicones that may negatively affect adhesion. New concrete must be cured a minimum of 28 days and diamond ground or shotblasted to a CSP 1-3 profile per SSPC-SP13/NACE 6 or ICRI Technical Guideline No. 310.2; a suitable moisture barrier must be in place for slabs on-grade, with MVT not exceeding three pounds per 1,000 square feet per 24 hours per ASTM F1869 and slab relative humidity not exceeding 75% per ASTM F2170, otherwise a Maverick moisture vapor barrier primer may be required. Because MavSeal HWU is a topcoat typically applied over an epoxy primer and basecoat, the hardened epoxy should be sanded with 80 grit screens to remove debris and smooth defects, then vacuumed and scrubbed or tacked to remove all dust. To recoat an existing coating, thoroughly sand or grind with 60 grit sandpaper or diamonds and clean to provide proper surface profile.

Mixing and Installation

Pre-mix Part B at low speed with a drill and Jiffy-type blade; if pigmenting, add a pint of MavTints per gallon kit and mix until uniformly dispersed. Slowly add the Part C filler and mix for 3 minutes, then add Part A and mix for 3 more minutes, mixing only one kit at a time. Cut in edges with a brush, keeping the film thin around obstructions and at the base of coves where material will run and pool. Pour the mix into a roller pan and apply with a 3/8" nap roller at 600 sq. ft./gal., dipping and rolling parallel paths about 8-10 feet long, agitating the pan frequently so the Part C filler does not settle, then back-roll perpendicular in a V-shape pattern and finish with straight passes, overlapping at least 1 ft. into the previous area. Minimize time between tie-ins and use control joints or natural breaks between mixes; a separate person on spiked shoes can finish roll no more than 20 minutes behind to blend application marks. Do not back-roll coating that has begun to tack up, which can cause orange peel texture or a whitish haze, and do not apply thicker than recommended. Air, surface and material temperatures must be 60° – 85°F with the floor at least 5 degrees above the dew point.
