Concrete Joint Filling and Repair That Holds the Shoulder
Concrete joint filling is the installation of a semi-rigid filler into the saw-cut joints of an industrial slab so hard wheels roll across the joint instead of dropping into it. Joint repair is what has to happen first when the shoulders are already broken: the spalled edge is cut back and rebuilt square before any filler goes in. Three Kinds of Joint. Three Different Answers.
Joints are where industrial floors fail first. Pallet jacks and steel wheels find them long before they find anything wrong with the field of the slab, because a hard wheel concentrates enormous load on a contact patch the size of a coin — and an unsupported joint edge is the one place that load lands on nothing.
Before a drop of filler is ordered, every joint on the plan gets sorted by what it is designed to do. Treating them all the same is why so much joint work gets bought twice.
How Each One Gets Treated
- Control (contraction) joints — saw-cut deliberately to tell the slab where to crack. They open a little as concrete shrinks and then stay put. These are filler joints: MavJoint JF, full depth, shaved flush.
- Construction joints — cold joints where one day's pour met the next. Same wheel exposure as a control joint, but usually wider, more irregular, and further along in shoulder breakdown. Same semi-rigid filler, more shoulder rebuild.
- Expansion and isolation joints — at columns, perimeter walls, dock edges, and equipment pads, these exist so the slab can move. They never get semi-rigid filler. They get backer rod and a movement-rated elastomeric sealant, per the MAV-JT detail series.
The Wrong Durometer Eats the Joint Shoulder
Most spalled joints we are called to fix were already filled. The material was simply the wrong hardness for the job it was given — and a filler that cannot carry a wheel is worse than an empty joint, because it looks finished.
- Too soft, and the wheel still drops. A caulk-grade sealant deflects under a coin-sized contact patch. The wheel bottoms out on the joint edge exactly as it would in an open joint, and the shoulder chips wider with every pass — now with a black stripe hiding the damage.
- Too rigid, and the joint tears itself apart. A slab that cannot move a little will move anyway. A filler with no elongation splits off the joint face, or takes a wedge of concrete with it. MavJoint JF is engineered for the middle: Shore A 80 ± 5, 242% elongation, and roughly ±10% joint movement capability.
- Filled short is not filled. A joint filled below the surface leaves an unsupported lip at the top of each shoulder — the exact geometry the filler was bought to eliminate. MavJoint JF is placed full depth, slightly proud, then shaved flush so the wheel never feels the joint at all.
- Filled over broken concrete stays broken. A filler transfers load into the shoulder; if the shoulder is already spalled, there is nothing to transfer into. Repair comes first, every time.

Repair, Fill, Shave — In That Order
A joint program is a sequence, not a product. Every linear foot we touch follows the same one, whether it is one dock apron or an entire racked warehouse.
- Sort the joints. Control, construction, expansion, and isolation joints are walked and marked before pricing. Type decides material, and material decides the schedule.
- Clean the joint to sound faces. Old filler, debris, and contamination come out; the joint faces are cut clean and dry. Filler bonds to concrete, not to what is sitting on it.
- Rebuild the shoulders square. Spalled edges are saw-cut to a vertical perimeter at a minimum 1/2″ depth — no featheredge — unsound material is removed, and an epoxy bond coat is placed wet-on-wet with MavPatch Epoxy. Short windows get MavRapidPatch instead.
- Fill full depth, slightly proud. MavJoint JF is placed to the surface in one continuous pass so the shoulder is supported all the way to the top.
- Shave flush. Cured filler is shaved level with the slab inside the 45–120 minute window at 75 °F, leaving nothing to chatter, chip, or collect debris.
- Hand the aisle back. Light traffic at 1 hour, heavy traffic at 2 hours at 72 °F — which is why joint work phases cleanly around a running operation.

Straight Answers Before You Call
What is the difference between a joint filler and a joint sealant?
A filler supports; a sealant moves. MavJoint JF is a semi-rigid filler at Shore A 80 ± 5 hardness, installed full depth in saw-cut control and construction joints so a hard wheel rolls across the joint instead of loading the edge. An elastomeric sealant over backer rod is soft and highly extensible, and it belongs in expansion and isolation joints where the slab is designed to move. Putting the soft product in a control joint is the single most common reason joint shoulders keep spalling.
Do the joint shoulders have to be repaired before the joint is filled?
Yes, wherever the edge is already broken. A filler can only transfer load into concrete that is still there, so a spalled shoulder gets cut back to a vertical perimeter at a minimum 1/2 inch depth, all unsound material is removed, and the edge is rebuilt square with MavPatch Epoxy at 8,710 psi compressive - or with MavRapidPatch when the shutdown window is short. Filling over a broken shoulder buys you the same failure again.
How long is an aisle out of service after the joints are filled?
MavJoint JF is tack-free in 12–15 minutes, shaves flush in 45–120 minutes at 75 °F, and returns to light traffic in 1 hour and heavy traffic in 2 hours at 72 °F. That is a same-shift turnaround on the fill itself. Where shoulders are being rebuilt first, the repair mortar sets the schedule, so we phase the work aisle by aisle and confirm every window against the product data sheet at your actual floor temperature.
Can joints be filled in freezers and cold storage aisles?
Yes. MavJoint JF is rated for application down to −25 °F per the TDS, so freezer and cold storage joints can be filled without bringing the room up to ambient temperature. Cure and shave timing stretch as the slab gets colder, so we verify the schedule against the data sheet at your actual operating temperature before we commit to a return-to-service time.
