MavCoat CRE Chemical Resistant Epoxy Coating

MavCoat CRE is a two-component, 100% solids, chemically resistant epoxy floor coating that provides a high-gloss, seamless, hygienic surface with increased chemical resistance. Mixed with MavTints color packs, this durable material cures to a smooth, glossy surface or, with the addition of aggregate, a non-skid texture. Color quartz or color flakes can also be broadcast to produce a seamless, decorative finish.

MavCoat CRE: Chemical Resistant Epoxy Coating

A typical system is a primer plus two coats of MavCoat CRE, or MavCoat CRE used as a topcoat over Maverick flooring systems. The concrete is primed with MavPrime EP at 200 – 533 sq. ft./gal. (3 – 8 mils); green concrete is primed with MavPrime MVT.

For a non-skid finish, clean, dry silica sand or aluminum oxide is broadcast into the wet resin; a full broadcast to refusal produces the best-looking and most durable system. Maverick offers a complete line of topcoats for increased resistance to UV exposure, chemicals and high traffic.

Where it fits: MavCoat CRE is applied in two coats over a MavPrime EP primer (MavPrime MVT on green concrete), or as a topcoat over Maverick flooring systems.

Read Before Specifying

  • Like all epoxies, MavCoat CRE is not 100% color stable without a UV-stable topcoat.
  • MavCoat CRE is not designed for exterior use or constant immersion applications.
  • Confirm product performance in the specific chemical environment prior to use.
  • Prepare the substrate according to the surface preparation requirements.
  • Do not apply to slabs on grade without a heavy, unruptured vapor barrier, or where moisture / MVT is present.
  • Do not apply at a temperature or thickness not recommended.
  • For industrial/commercial use. Installation by trained personnel only.
  • Do not allow materials to freeze.

Substrate Requirements

Apply only to clean, dry and sound concrete that is free of coatings, sealers, curing compounds, oils, greases and other contaminants that may affect adhesion. New concrete should be cured a minimum of 28 days (green concrete is primed with MavPrime MVT); chemically contaminated concrete must be neutralized or removed, laitance and weak surface layers removed, and the concrete must have a minimum surface tensile strength of 300 psi per ASTM D4541. The surface is mechanically prepared to a CSP 3 – CSP 5 profile per ICRI Guideline 310.2R (equal to 60-grit sandpaper or coarser), and all surface irregularities, cracks, expansion joints and control joints are addressed before application. Do not apply to slabs on grade unless a heavy, unruptured vapor barrier is installed under the slab; moisture vapor transmission must be 3 lbs. or less per 1,000 sq. ft. in 24 hours per ASTM F1869 and in-situ relative humidity must be below 75% per ASTM F2170. Because some concrete outgasses, the primer and coating are applied while the substrate temperature is dropping (typically evening), and double priming greatly reduces outgassing.

Mixing and Installation

Air temperature must be 50° – 95°F (10° – 35°C) and the floor at least 5°F above the dew point; higher temperatures shorten pot life and working time. The concrete is primed with MavPrime EP at 200 – 533 sq. ft./gal. (3 – 8 mils). MavCoat CRE mixes 2 parts A (resin) to 1 part B (hardener) by volume: Part A is pre-mixed, one MavTints color pack per 3 mixed gallons is added if pigmenting (2 packs for White, Light Gray and Safety Yellow), then Part B is poured into the Part A pail and mixed for a minimum of two minutes with a Jiffy-type mixer at low speed, scraping the sides because unmixed material will not cure. The mixed material is applied by roller, or by squeegee and back-roll, emptying the pail onto the surface quickly for maximum working time and back-rolling lightly without over-rolling, which can introduce air bubbles. For a non-skid finish, silica sand or aluminum oxide is broadcast into the wet resin, with excess removed and the floor scraped before the second coat. The second coat is applied after the first is tack free (approx. 10 hours @ 70°F) and before the 24-hour recoat window closes.

Full step-by-step instructions, pot life and recoat windows are in the MavCoat CRE product data sheet. Maverick installs MavCoat CRE with its own crews.
