MavCoat Metallic Decorative Self-Leveling Epoxy

MavCoat Metallic is supplied as a 100% solids, self-leveling epoxy designed to be used with Metallic Additive and dropped over a tinted basecoat applied to sealed concrete. The epoxy is resistant to blush and has an extended working time for maximum control and freedom to create any design with dramatic color movement, depth, and shine.

MavCoat Metallic: Decorative Self-Leveling Epoxy

3 gallons of MavCoat Metallic is pigmented with a 32 oz. jar of Metallic Additive, with 16 oz. of acetone added at mixing. The finished metallic layer is protected with a Maverick topcoat.

Apply another coat of epoxy or a topcoat within 48 hours of the initial coat of MavCoat Metallic. If the recoat window is missed, the coating system will need to be sanded.

Where it fits: MavCoat Metallic is a decorative metallic layer dropped over a tinted basecoat applied to sealed concrete and protected with a Maverick topcoat.

  • Theoretical coverage: Wet film 32 – 80 mils (813 – 2032 microns); coverage 20 – 50 sq. ft./gal. (.49 – 1.23 m²/L). Higher temperatures will shorten pot-life and working time. Apply another coat of epoxy or a topcoat within 48 hours of the initial coat of MavCoat Metallic; if the recoat window is missed, the coating system will need to be sanded.
  • Packaging: MavCoat Metallic Base, 2 gallons (item 40012717). MavCoat Metallic Activator, 1 gallon (item 40012724). Mixed 2 Base : 1 Activator by volume for a 3-gallon mix; 3 gallons of MavCoat Metallic is pigmented with a 32 oz. jar of Metallic Additive.
  • Colors and finish: Neutral / Gloss. 3 gallons of MavCoat Metallic is pigmented with a 32 oz. jar of Metallic Additive.
  • Shelf life and storage: 12 months from date of manufacture when stored indoors in the original unopened container at 60°F – 85°F (16°C – 29°C) in a dry location with humidity below 65%. Do not allow materials to freeze.

Substrate Requirements

Concrete and coated concrete surfaces must be sound, clean, dry and free of contaminants such as dirt, dust, grease, oil, silicones and other contaminants that may negatively affect adhesion. MavCoat Metallic is designed to be used with Metallic Additive and dropped over a tinted basecoat applied to sealed concrete; see the appropriate product data sheets for the primer and basecoat. A suitable moisture barrier must be in place for concrete slabs on-grade, since seasonal variations in ground moisture can cause excessive moisture vapor transmission regardless of results measured before coating. The MVT rate must not exceed three pounds per 1,000 square feet per 24 hours per ASTM F1869 and slab relative humidity must not exceed 75% per ASTM F2170; where moisture exceeds these limits, MavCoat MVB moisture vapor barrier primer may be required. Floor temperature must be at least 5 degrees over the current dew point.

Mixing and Installation

MavCoat Metallic is mixed 2 parts Base to 1 part Activator by volume, and is recommended over a tinted basecoat applied over sealed concrete to reduce outgassing on uncoated concrete floors. Pre-mix the Base at low speed for one minute, mix in 16 oz. of acetone, then add the 32 oz. of Metallic Additive and mix very well to break up pigment agglomerate; add the Activator and mix for three minutes until uniform, and do not mix more material than can be applied in 20 – 30 minutes. Immediately pour all mixed material onto the floor in beads or puddles, without scraping the pail sides or leaving it overturned to drain, and never roll material out of a bucket or roller pan. For designs with multiple colors, repeat the mixing for each color. Wearing spiked shoes, use the tool preferred by the artist to blend colors, ensuring consistent coverage, minimal application lines and a consistent film thickness. Do not work the material after it begins to get sticky, as the epoxy will not level and colored epoxy may turn a different shade.
