MavCoat HB High-Build Epoxy Floor System

MavCoat HB is a high-gloss and durable epoxy system designed to withstand abusive environments. This 2-layer system restores eroded floors to a high-gloss finish and can be top-coated with high-wear and chemical resistant topcoats for extra levels of protection.

MavCoat HB: High-Build Epoxy Floor System

The system is built in two layers over a prepared concrete substrate (CSP 3 or greater): a clear 100% solids epoxy primer applied at 3 – 8 mils, followed by MavCoat SLE, a 100% solids self-leveling epoxy applied at 10 – 30 mils. Any Maverick epoxy primer may be used as the clear primer layer, and other Maverick products may be used as alternative parts of the system.

Both layers are packaged clear and can be pigmented on site with MavTints pigment packs. One pint of MavTints pigments a 1.5 gallon mix of the primer or a 3 gallon mix of MavCoat SLE in Haze Gray, Light Gray, Deck Gray, Sandstone, White, Black and Tile Red; two pints of White or Sandstone can be used to improve hide in 3 gallon mixes of MavCoat SLE.

Where it fits: MavCoat HB is a complete two-layer floor system — a clear Maverick epoxy primer plus a MavCoat SLE self-leveling epoxy topcoat — that can itself be top-coated with high-wear and chemical resistant Maverick topcoats for extra protection.

MavCoat HB Layer Stack

As drawn in the MavCoat HB system guide, topcoat first. Thicknesses and rates are nominal; the system guide governs.

Read Before Specifying

  • System is not aliphatic and may yellow over time.
  • Do not apply at temperatures or thicknesses not recommended.
  • Do not delay in pouring mixed material onto the floor.
  • Do not make partial mixes.
  • Do not invert epoxy pails to drain.
  • Do not apply over loose or unsound concrete, asphalt or bitumen substrates, glazed tile or nonporous brick and tile, magnesite, copper, metal, polyesters, or elastomeric membranes.
  • Moving joints and shrinkage cracks may reflect through the system.
  • Joints that are designed to move may reflect through the finished flooring system if they are not honored.
  • Tire marking may occur.

Substrate Requirements

Concrete and coated concrete surfaces must be sound, clean, dry and free of loose coatings, dirt, dust, grease, oil, silicone and other contaminants that may negatively affect adhesion. New or bare concrete is diamond ground or shotblasted to a CSP-3 or greater profile (refer to SSPC-SP13 / NACE 6 or ICRI Technical Guideline No. 310.2) and must be cured a minimum of 28 days. Previously coated surfaces are cleaned and then thoroughly ground with 30 grit metal diamonds to completely remove any grout or topcoats that are not epoxy based. A suitable moisture barrier must be in place for slabs on grade; the MVT rate must not exceed three pounds per 1,000 square feet per 24 hours per ASTM F1869 and the relative humidity of the slab must not exceed 75% per ASTM F2170, and where moisture exceeds these limits MavCoat MVB moisture vapor barrier primer may be required. Cracks, holes, eroded and spalled areas are patched with MavPatch Epoxy or a Maverick 100% solids epoxy thickened with fumed silica and scraped flush, and termination points around drains, dock plates and high-impact areas are sawcut and keyed in.

Mixing and Installation

Air, surface and material temperatures must be 60° – 85°F (16° – 29°C); higher temperatures and humidity shorten pot life and working time. Both the primer and MavCoat SLE mix 2 parts Part-A to 1 part Part-B by volume: pre-mix Part-A at low speed for 1 minute (adding MavTints if pigmenting), add Part-B and mix for three minutes until uniform, and mix no more material than can be applied in 10 – 15 minutes. The primer is immediately poured onto the floor in a long bead and spread at 3 – 8 mils with a flat squeegee or metal spring blade while wearing spiked shoes; a tight, thin coat with no back-roll is the best way to minimize outgassing bubbles, and if back-rolling, a non-shed 3/8" roller is used to even out squeegee passes. After the primer has dried, MavCoat SLE is poured in a bead, spread with a 1/8" notched squeegee, and back-rolled with a non-shed 3/8" roller before it begins to get sticky; if MavCoat SLE is not applied within 24 hours of priming, the primer is deglossed with sandpaper, diamonds or Diamabrush before coating. Isolation, expansion and movable joints are honored with the appropriate joint material after the coating system is installed, while contraction (sawcut) joints may be filled and coated over.

Full step-by-step instructions, pot life and recoat windows are in the MavCoat HB system guide. Maverick installs MavCoat HB with its own crews.
