The Schedule Is the Product

Nobody buys polyaspartic for the chemistry. They buy it because a conventional epoxy floor wants days of recoat windows, and the plant does not have days. Fast-cure chemistry collapses that sequence: prime, build, broadcast, and topcoat run as one continuous operation instead of four separate mobilizations spread across a week.

Cold Slabs Are Where Polyaspartic Earns Its Keep

Half the year in this market, the deciding factor is not chemistry preference — it is whether anything will cure at all. Conventional epoxies slow down sharply as the slab cools, and in an unheated December warehouse they effectively stop. The fast-cure system carries a substrate application range of 35 °F to 85 °F, which covers a great many Michigan warehouses, hangars, dock aprons, and unconditioned garages exactly as we find them.

Air temperature is the number people quote; slab temperature is the number that governs. Concrete lags the air by hours, so we measure the substrate and the dew point before a crew opens a kit. If the slab sits below dew point, coating it is how adhesion failures are manufactured — we heat, dehumidify, or reschedule rather than gamble on a floor we have to warrant.

What We Verify Before a Winter Install

  • Slab temperature, taken at the slab. Not the thermostat, not the forecast — the concrete itself, in the coldest bay.
  • Dew point spread. Surface temperature has to stay clear of dew point through the full cure, not just at the moment of application.
  • Moisture in the slab. Winter-closed buildings hide moisture problems; where testing calls for it, a MavPrime moisture mitigation pass goes down first.
  • Surface profile. Diamond grinding or shot blasting to CSP 2–3, cold weather or not. Fast cure never substitutes for preparation.
  • Conditioning plan. Temporary heat and airflow are part of the crew plan and the price, decided before mobilization instead of improvised on site.

Topcoat Over Epoxy, or the Whole System?

Polyaspartic is a superb wear surface and a poor body coat. Built thin over a proper epoxy build, it is the best-performing part of the floor; asked to be the entire floor, it gives up the film thickness that makes a resinous system durable. The honest question is which of these two jobs you actually have.

Is polyaspartic better than epoxy?

It is better at different things, which is why we use both in the same floor. Epoxy is the body of the system — thickness, build, and cost-effective film. Polyaspartic is the wear surface: UV-stable and non-yellowing where epoxies amber, 30 mg loss on ASTM D4060 abrasion against 90 mg for the epoxy basecoat, and fast enough to compress the schedule. A polyaspartic-only floor gives up the build an epoxy body coat provides.

Do I need a full polyaspartic system or just a polyaspartic topcoat?

If the existing epoxy floor is sound and well bonded and the complaint is gloss, yellowing, or wear, a MavSeal topcoat over the prepared existing coating is the right call and the shorter shutdown. If the floor is delaminating, chalking, contaminated, or coming apart at joints and spalls, a topcoat only buys time — the substrate gets repaired and a full MavPrime EP, MavCoat FC, and MavSeal UPA build-up goes down.
